Staying safe around drunk drivers

Illinois motorists will want to consider the following tips if they ever find themselves sharing the road with a drunk driver. First, it is important to know the signs of drunk driving. These include turning too wide, making sudden or illegal turns, zigzagging on the road, driving too slowly and stopping abruptly.

Defensive driving is necessary when around drunk drivers. This means being ready to take quick, evasive action. One should keep a safe distance from the suspected drunk driver or let the driver pass one by. If the driver is about to collide head-on with one's vehicle, one must pull over, stop, flash the lights and honk the horn.

Once the driver passes by, it would be a good idea to call the police, giving a description of the vehicle and mentioning the road it's on and its direction. However, one must never try to stop a drunk driver. If one follows the driver, one must still obey traffic laws and avoid speeding, even if that means falling behind. When the police catch up, do not try to assist them with the arrest.

Residents should, in general, avoid driving after midnight, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. They should always wear their seat belt and use four-lane highways when possible. They can also consider being the designated driver for their friends.

Drunk driving is a factor in many accidents, but those who are injured through no fault of their own may be able to recover damages under personal injury law. It may be advisable to have a lawyer file the claim against the defendant's auto insurance company and try to negotiate a settlement. Litigation might be necessary if the amount offered is insufficient.
