Dump and ready-mix concrete truck crash rates continue to rise

According to a report from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the number of crashes involving dump trucks and ready-mix concrete delivery trucks continues to rise. This trend, experts say, is largely due to a multi-industry problem with bad driving habits. Truckers in Illinois may be interested in the specifics of the statistics.

The FMCSA reported on 2016 since this is the latest year with complete data. There were 8,206 dump truck crashes that were so severe that the vehicle had to be towed away. In addition, there were 838 similar crashes with ready-mix concrete trucks. This represents a jump of 9 and 9.6 percent, respectively, from 2015. Crashes resulting in injuries went up 2.7 percent in the case of dump trucks with a total of 5,483. They increased 3.8 percent for concrete trucks.

Fatal accidents, though they saw a slight decline among dump trucks from 369 to 367, rose for concrete trucks from 33 to 38. Over the past decade, efforts to prevent accidents in the trucking industry have stalled. In the early 2000s, the numbers were lower amid the efforts of federal regulators and insurance agencies to improve safety tech and driver safety campaigns.

Bad trucking habits like speeding, fatigued driving and distracted driving, especially phone use behind the wheel, are rampant. Many truckers are encouraged through by-the-load incentives to act negligently to make quicker deliveries.

A trucking company may be held responsible if an operator's negligence leads to a crash and injuries. A victim can see a lawyer if they intend to file a personal injury claim. Legal counsel could negotiate on a victim's behalf for a settlement, sidestepping the tactics of the trucking company's own legal team. As a last resort, the lawyer can always take the case to court. A successful injury claim can cover medical expenses, lost wages, vehicle repair costs and more.
