Making these mistakes after a crash could cost you your claim

Remembering what to do – and what not to do – after a crash isn’t always a simple task when adrenaline and tensions are running high. But what you do at the scene of an accident can be vital to your case. Failing to take action could hurt your chances of successfully pursuing a claim.

Here are some common mistakes to avoid after you’ve been in a motor vehicle accident.

Failing to seek medical attention

Many clients say they did not seek medical attention after an accident because they “felt fine at the time.” Only days or weeks after the crash do they begin experiencing symptoms and realize they were injured.

It’s important to remember that not all injuries from car accidents present symptoms immediately. Insurance companies could try to blame your injuries on an unrelated event to avoid paying your medical expenses. By seeking medical attention right away you may have a better chance at proving that your injuries were a direct result of the crash.

Neglecting to take pictures at the scene

Some of our clients make the mistake of waiting until they get home to take photographs. If possible you may want to take pictures of any property damage and your injuries on site. Photographic evidence taken at the scene can be harder to challenge than if they were taken later.

Insurance companies may also dispute that some or all of the property damage to your vehicle wasn’t caused by the crash. Likewise if you fail to take pictures of the other driver’s car they may make some repairs to contest your account of events.

It can be disorienting trying to figure out what to do after a crash but creating a game plan now can help you prepare if you are ever in that situation. If you avoid making these common mistakes you may have a stronger claim and a better chance of being compensated for your injuries.
