How contempt can ruin a marriage

Illinois spouses who have an irreversible contempt for their partners are the most likely to see their marriages end in divorce. This is according to one scientist who has observed the communication patterns of thousands of couples. When a person shows contempt for a partner, he or she is indicating a lack of respect. Contempt can also indicate a lack of regard for that person's self-esteem.

Examples of contempt include name calling or mocking someone in a manner that is not playful or fun. Those who roll their eyes at their partners or use other forms of negative body language may also be engaging in such behavior. Over time, the target of this behavior will feel less inclined to be intimate with the perpetrator of the abuse. The targeted spouse might also feel less inclined to listen or communicate with his or her partner.

However, couples may be able to save their marriages by learning how to communicate again. This may mean looking back in time to when the relationship was in a better place. If couples can remember why they met and decided to get married, it is possible to start communicating in a stronger and healthier way. By approaching the relationship as a team, the couple could identify and remedy issues within it.

The end of a marriage can be confusing. However, an attorney could explain how property is divided or when an individual may be entitled to alimony. Legal counsel can also review prenuptial agreements or help parents create plans regarding child custody and visitation.
