Geronimo Allison charged with drug possession

Illinois fans of NFL player Geronimo Allison might have heard that he was stopped for speeding on Sept. 4, 2016 and that the traffic stop led to additional charges. His speed was reported to be 81 mph in a 70 mph zone. According to the officer who stopped him, the interior of his car smelled like marijuana.

Allison acknowledged that he played for the Green Bay Packers and claimed that the smell was residue from the previous night when there were other people in his car smoking marijuana. However, on a search, the officer found cigars stuffed with a substance that had THC in them. Allison was taken into custody where he refused to answer any more questions.

On Dec. 15, the district attorney's office filed charges against Allison for misdemeanor marijuana possession. Allison was fined $200.50 for the speeding ticket and will appear on court on the possession charge Jan. 23. The Green Bay Packers declined to comment since the situation is ongoing.

In addition to the legal implications, drug charges can have a serious impact on other aspects of a person's life. If an individual has a high-profile career or works in sectors such as health care or education, the drug charges could result in the loss of work. A person might be denied financial aid for college on the basis of drug charges. The possession of even small amounts of drugs could result in severe penalties, so people who are facing such charges may want to consult an attorney about their options. It might be possible to enter into plea bargain in exchange for a lesser sentence.
