Divorce can be difficult on children

A separation is a traumatic event in the lives of both spouses, but perhaps even more so for any children that may have been the product of their union. Divorce hits children hard, and as many Illinois residents are already aware, the process of determining child support and custody can be even more difficult. It is important for parents to be aware of their actions and seek support where appropriate to help themselves and their children persevere through this challenging time.

There is no question that divorce is emotionally painful, but expressing those emotions to children can confuse and upset them. From a legal standpoint, this can influence issues of child custody -- children may feel conflicted about which parent they may wish to live with if parents are seen as at odds with one another. Involving children in the process of transition and remaining positive about a former spouse can help smooth this road.

As child custody is ironed out, children may need additional support in adapting to their new lifestyle, particularly if the primary parent was not previously a staple in their lives. Again, maintaining openness about the divorce, age-appropriate for the children involved, can give them a sense of control over a situation that can feel quite overwhelming for children and adults alike. Seeking external support for children and parents going through a divorce may be beneficial as well.

No one enters a marriage expecting it to end in divorce, particularly where children are concerned. However, Illinois residents can agree that not every marriage is destined to last forever. The best thing parents can do for their children is to approach a divorce with as much knowledge and pre-planning as possible to help make the process as smooth and efficient as it can be.
