Non-payment of Illinois child support can lead to arrest warrant

Child support warrants for several parents in Illinois have been issued recently. Those who don't pay their child support in a timely manner may be subjected to criminal action. However, it is important to remember that warrants are normally only issued when there is a large amount of money that remains unpaid. Any custodial parent in a situation like this may be forced to seek legal action in order to receive the money the court has ordered.

A 52-year-old man is behind on his payments to the tune of almost $40,000. Another parent reportedly owes over $35,000. However, one of the most apparently egregious offenders is a 50-year-old Illinois man who is behind on his payments by over $80,000.

The law requires parents to support their minor children, even if the parents are separated or divorced. When a noncustodial parent fails to make their payments, custodial parents can seek legal action to enforce the court order. Not receiving the money owed can be detrimental to a family and place them in a difficult financial situation.

Law enforcement may eventually step in to help find delinquent parents, as evidenced by the warrants recently issued. The amount of money these Illinois parents owe and have apparently failed to pay likely affects the other parent as well as the children. When a parent is forced to seek resolution to the non-payment of child support, it could result in a difficult and lengthy legal battle. However, some parents on the other side of the battle may also have the right to seek a modification to their support order, especially if they are able to prove a financial hardship through no fault of their own. In cases like these, it can pay off knowing one's legal rights as they concern support payments.
