Co-parenting with nesting

Illinois parents who are getting a divorce may want to consider nesting as part of their co-parenting arrangement. Nesting, which entails allowing the children to remain in the family home while the parents come and go according to their custody schedule, provide a number of benefits for the children.

Nesting is similar to shared physical custody as it allows both parents to bond with their children and remain an active part of their everyday lives. However, unlike shared custody, nesting does not require that the children move between homes, which can often cause a disruption to their lives.

Instead, nesting allows the child to stay in the home where they will be secure and have a familiar place where they can maintain a close relationship with both parents. Parents may prefer nesting if they do not have the finances to keep their home and purchase a second one that would be suitable for their children. Children can benefit from nesting as it can provide them with a feeling of permanence which can help them. They can also witness their parents cooperate for their benefit.

Parents considering nesting should keep in mind that it may take effort on their part to make it work. They may have to deal with a lack of privacy and learn how to avoid arguing about issues, such as household chores or grocery shopping. Nesting is only beneficial when there is full cooperation between the parents, and it usually is a short-term solution. Parents who are considering this type of child custody arrangement may want to meet with their respective attorneys to see if it is an appropriate solution under their circumstances.
