Experts take a guess at top reasons for 2015 divorce filings

While there are still just three and a half months left in the year, some experts are already predicting what the top three reasons behind divorce filings in 2015 will be. The estimates appear to be based on the results of a survey from another year, but the implications are likely still relevant for Illinois couples. Depending on the reason, couples might have the choice to either file for a no-fault or at-fault divorce.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, cheating is still at the top of the list for factors that influence a divorce. It is currently believed that cheating spouses could be responsible for up to 55 percent of divorce filings, which is actually in stark contrast to how many couples actually attempt to continue married life after discovering an affair. However, infidelity can take its toll on a relationship, and the majority of couples who try to work on their marriage ultimately end up filing for divorce anyway.

Social media -- especially Twitter and Facebook -- have been mentioned in an incredibly high number of divorce filings. In 2010, it was exceptionally rare to hear of Facebook having any type of influence on a divorce, although it has become commonplace in the span of only five years. Often, social media is cited in the context of discovering a spouse's undesirable behavior, such as carrying on inappropriate relationships.

Both of these factors appear to feed into what experts say will be the third most common cause of divorce in 2015 -- resentment. While resentment is not typically listed directly on a divorce filing, it does play a role in other reasons, such as unreasonable behavior from a spouse, one of the top reasons for divorce in 2011. The year 2011 also boasted a high number of divorces based on extramarital affairs, which were responsible for about a quarter of filings.

While it can be easy enough to file for a no-fault divorce in Illinois, there is still the option to file on certain grounds. For instance, an individual filing for divorce might choose to file on the grounds of adultery or various other options. Although there are many similarities between these two types of divorce, there are also differences that can have a profound impact on a settlement and should be given special consideration before filing.
