Experts warn Illinois residents not to delay divorce

It is a fairly accurate statement that no one enters a marriage expecting it to fail. Indeed, as many Illinois residents can attest, many people will suffer and sacrifice to make their marriage work rather than seek a divorce, and when they do, the process tends to take longer. But some experts are warning that putting off ratifying a separation may do more harm than good in the long run.

Once the decision has been made to seek a divorce, many experts say it is important to move ahead immediately. A failure to do so can result in prolonged arguments and a deepening emotional rift between partners that can cause problems during the divorce process. It also increases the potential for one or both partners to meet new love interests, further complicating the situation.

Prolonging the process increases the likelihood that family and friends will become more intrinsically involved, introducing unstable elements to a critical situation. While friends and family may have the best intentions, their involvement can often be more of a detriment than a help. Finally, keeping the process short and efficient is a good way to ensure it does not become more emotionally and financially costly than it needs to.

There is no getting around the fact that, for many people, divorce is rarely pleasant. However, it is possible to mitigate the unpleasant elements of the process if it is approached by both parties with the intent to reach an amicable agreement quickly and with a minimum of related drama. Illinois residents engaged in divorce are urged to "tear off the bandage" quickly, lest the process become harder as time passes.
